V THE INDEPENDENT. THURSDAY JUNE 14, 1888 Next Saturday at 1 p. m. the legal voters of the Ilillsboro Bchool Iis triotisin deckle between a tumble down school house and an elegant and attractive building; between luossbackism and progress; between studious school-rooms and pupils rampant upon the streets; between the enforced ox-wagon era of our fathers and the present ago of steam; between the taxation of self to the extent of a few dollars and the en richment of our possessions ten-fold; between indifference and a de termination to kee,p pace with the onward march of internal improve ments within our fair state. Do not put off the benefits of the future which may be eujoyel in the present., .Let us induce desirable immigration to our town and the county. Va have always avoided casting unjust reHectioua upon any person or persons. ut we do not hold ourstlf responsible for interpre tations of articles that may bo made for partisan purposes. On the Sat urday preceding the day of election, an extract was read from The Isoe- pexdent at the court house in Hill boro, in which the reader essayed to boldly claim this paper bad de nounced Mr. J. AV. Morgan, county clerk, as' a traitor to the republican party. Such statement was unwar ranted. AVe made no allusion whatever to Mr. Morgan. That the public may the more fully under stand our language, we herewith reproduce what was said regarding the oflice of clerk : . AVith all respect to Mr. "Weather red aud his friends, we must Bay there is no oflice in the county of such political importance as that of county clerk in molding political sentiment. That official is con tinually thrown in contact with persons from every part of the coun ty, and if true to his party can be of great service, but if a traitor, can do it deep injury. Mr. Weatherred is a man true to the democratic party, and if he could receive the election to that office to morrow by openly voting the republican ticket, he could not be brought to such trai torous act. - A Washington dispatch under date of yesterday says: In the house there is a strong undercurrent for one man. Allison has his friends there, and Gresham and other aspirants, but the predominant preference among nearly all the prominent republican represent atives as well as among those less -widely kuowu, is fur this one of their number. If there be one dark horse in the race this one man is McKinley, of Ohio. It is astonish ing what enthusiasm has been nnral'Attail fni li i in kor.'.A liia lilficterlv SpEt'l'lr-on tliS tari if J.V.1. w. Maine, who is almost dumb in his reticence on his preference for this candidate or ut candidate, is known anion friends to greatly desire Mc nley's nomination Burrows, of .Uicij'an. member of "the committee on ways and means, and one of the a' est men in the house, is warmly favor of McKin ley. Gov. Long, of Massachusetts, tbinks McKinley is the strongest man in the party, after Blaine. Mc Kinley has some of the traits of Mr. "Blaine in a marked degree. He is an orator of tho very highest order. He combines emotion and intellect, so that it is difficult to say whether his hearers aro more moved by the conviction which he induces, or by the feeling which he arouses. There is much dissimilitude be tween Iiandall find the Cleveland administration. Mr. Kaudall is the leader of the protection democrats, but has been heavily Bat down upon by free trade. When he heard of the great majority the republicans had rolled up in Oregon, he quietly remarked: "The democrats won't know thev are running this time." , Tho Loudon Standard, in a Ion editorial, characterizes General Sheridau as one of the most brilliant soldiers of modern times. The eulogy, coming from a source especially, conservative wherever the Western republic is anywhere con cerned, has all the more gratifying force. i press has become the con servator of public moials, and to the newspaper as much as to the pulpit are we indebted for an enlightened moral sentiment, and whatever con cerns the weal of society. Wrong doers dread the censuro and expo sure which the press gives them more than the rigors of the law.nnd of many a luckless wight is deterred from the commission of crime through fear of publicity. The press is the bulwark of societ, the disseminator of knowledge, the pro moter of virtue, the defender of truth and honor, the terror of the lawless, the swift messenger of justice, and the only power which can hold in subject those occupying high, official positions and charged with the execution of sacred public trusts. Ex. At last the university of Oxford, England, has opened its final classical examinations to women. That is regarded as another triumph for the fair sex in England. The state printing office at Sacra mento has been ao industriously occupied in manufacturing text books to meet the expected demand that it now has about sixty tons of readers, spellers and arithmetics on hand and is looking for quarters in which to stow them, the governor having given orders that no more be stowed away in the capitol building. These sixty tons represent 223,000 books, according to the Sacramento Bee, and there are about 25,000 histories and 30,000 spellers in rapid progress of completion. Upon the first of next July the law requires the various counties to order their school books from the state. The filling of these orders will doubtless relieve the present want of storage room, but none the less there is need of permanent quarters in which the state's "educational instruments" may pe securely warehoused. Oak land Time. What is the reason Oregon cannot manufacture her own school books? Statesman. Sufficient proof that the need of an international language is felt by the people of the United States, is the vast nuiuler that have com menced the study of Volapuk in the past year. This number, however, is small compared with the students of the new language in Europe and Asia. It is bnry nine years since Schleyer,a Catholic priest in Baden, published an outline of this ex tremely simple and logical system for international communication, vet in that time more than a million persons have studied and mastered it. A complete mastery of it, by the way, can be obtained by six days of close application. Chauttau qua. not to be behind the colleges that have introduced it into tbeir cur riculum, offers a course in Volapuk iu August, taught by Mr. Charles E Sprague, of New Tork. Mr. Sprague was appointed at Munich in 1887 academician for America, and is the highest authority in the United States in this new language. Jt is impossible to enumerate the advan tages that would accrue to business men, travelers, scientists, and seek ers after knowledge in general, could a universal adoption of this common medium be secured. Chautauqua. Among the small and apparently spiteful vetoes of President Cleve land, one was that of a bill for a postoffice building in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in Congressman Snowden'n district. Snowtlen is a democrat, but lie refused to vote for the Mills bill, and Mr. Cleveland vetoed his bill. It was small; but Cleveland was ejual to it. He also vetoed a bill to jrovide a postoffice building in McKingley's district. Ohio, which is republican. Me i I. - I .iA - . . r..i - . . . . ;. 1:11 against the 31 ills bill. The house committee has since unanimously recommended the passage of both bills over the veto. The democrats on the committee are mortified at the petty spite action of the presi dent in abusing the pjwer of his office to partisan vengeance. Ex. Advices from Oregon pronounces i it a Waterloo for democrats. Tele grams of congratulation are pouring in upon Senator Polph, whose re election is practically assured. He is Huch an able ami useful senator for the entire northwest that demo crats an well as republicans are glad to know that he will succeed him self. Port Toicnzend Arqu. William A. Smith, who died at Richmond, Va., a few days since, is entitled to a monument. He is the only man who, since the foundation of the government, resigned a seat in congress on the ground that he did not think that he had sense enough to properly represent his constituents. The re were two warmly-contested county seat lights in Oregon this jear one in Wallow nnd one in (Jilliam county. Joseph, the estab lished county seat in Wallowa, failed to retain that honor, the town of Enterprise, true to its name, se curing the victory at the polls by a vote or 432 to 370, the little town of Lostine receiving 57 votes, mainly from her own citizens. In Gilliam county the contest was closer, but the desire to remove the county seat from Arlington was divided between two factions, respectively the sup porters of the claims of Condon and of Fossil. This division of the op position resulted, as was easily to hae been foreseen, in the success Arlington. The vote was, Arling ton 482, Condon 407, Fossil 330. Al though at the extreme northern end of the county, Arlington is still the best location for tho county seat, owing to its railroad facilities and its easy means of communication with other counties by mail or telegraph. Condon is the most centrally lo cated of the three towns, and when a railroad shall bisect the county an other contest would undoubtedly re sult in establishing her geographi cal claims. Re . : Died,, in Greenville, June 11th, Robert Franklin, son of John and Clara Ireland, aged 10 months and 6 days. Subscribe for Tue Indepfxdext. SAW ABOUT OKEGUX. Boston Herald. The democrats propose and the repub licans dispose. That's about the differ ence between St. Iiouis and Oregon this week. Philadelphia Fret;. Oregon, the first state to pass regular ly and formally on the president's free trade policy, has repudiated it by one of the largest majorities ever piven in that state for anything or anybody. Wilmington (Pel.) News. The result in Oregon goes to xliow that the folly of a theory which looks toward foreign countries as a source of regular supply for the American market is thoroughly appreciated. Providence Journal (Mag.) The election return indicate that the democratic procession will not start from Oregon this year. Biooklyn Citizen, (Peni.i It will become a thing in order to in quire whether the prohibitionists of Oregon have set an example of weak kneedness that is likely to le followed by their brethren in the other .states. Philadelphia Ledger There is a warning for the freetraders in the voices from Oregon, and even they can read it without the aid of an inter preter. It means that Oregon and the other Pacific states have no use for any party that proposes to turn the markets of America over to the labor of Europe. Milwaukee dentine. lreron eiectea a democratic governor two years go. One of the largest re publican majorities it ever east was in 1884 and was a little over 2000. In 1880 the republicans carried the state by less than 1000. Now under the imjtettis of Mr. Cleveland's free trade message, it gives 7000 republican majority. If the democrats find any coin fort in these figures we do not wi.h to limiiiii their enjoyment. The republicans are also very well satisfied. Letters Averuel.
